The historically important ruins of a small brick and sandstone temple in very poor condition. The earliest elements date from the pre-Angkorian 8th century. Inscriptions indicate that a temple dedicated to the Hindu ‘god of the depths’ was previously located on the same spot. Ak Yom is the earliest known example of the 'temple-mountain' architectural design formula, which was to become a primary design formula for many of the Angkorian period temples including Angkor Wat.

Angkor Thom  
Constructed: Late 12th - Early 13th century C.E. Religion: Buddhism 
King/Patron: Jayavarman VII Style: Bayon Angkor Thom (Big Angkor) is a 3km2 walled and moated royal city and was the last capital of the Angkorian empire. After Jayavarman VII recaptured the Angkorian capital from the Cham invaders in 1181, he began a massive building campaign across the empire, constructing Angkor Thom as his new capital city. He began with existing structures such as Baphuon and 
Phimeanakas and built a grand enclosed city around them, adding the outer wall/moat. He then constructed some of Angkor's greatest temples including his state-temple, Bayon, set at the center of the city. There are five entrances (gates) to the city, one for each cardinal point, and the victory gate leading to the Royal Palace area. Each gate is crowned with 4 giant faces. The South Gate is often the first stop on a tour. 
 
Angkor Wat 
Constructed: Early - Mid 12th century C.E. Religion: Hinduism 
King/Patron: Suryavarman II Style: Angkor Wat 
Angkor Wat is visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking. It is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five lotus-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level. Angkor Wat is the centerpiece of any visit to the temples of Angkor. At the apex of Khmer political and military dominance in the region, Suryavarman II constructed Angkor Wat in the form of a massive 'temple-mountain' dedicated to the Hindu god, Vishnu. It served as his state temple, though the temple’s uncommon westward orientation has led some to suggest that it was constructed as Suryavarman II’s funerary temple. Other temples of the same style and period include Thommanon, Banteay Samre, Wat Atwea and Beng Melea, which may have served as a prototype to Angkor Wat. 
Angkor Wat is surrounded by a moat and an exterior wall measuring 1300 meters x 1500 meters. The temple itself is 1 km square and consists of three levels surmounted by a central tower. The walls of the temple are covered inside and out with bas-reliefs and carvings. Nearly 2000 distinctively rendered apsara carvings adorn the walls throughout the temple and represent some of the finest examples of apsara carvings in Angkorian-era art. But it is the exterior walls of the lower level that display the most extraordinary bas-reliefs, depicting stories and characters from Hindu mythology and the historical wars of Suryavarman II. It is in the viewing of the bas-reliefs that a tour guide can be very helpful. 
The first level of is the most artistically interesting. Most visitors begin their exploration with the bas-reliefs that cover the exterior wall of the first level, following the bas-reliefs counterclockwise around the temple. Bas-relief highlights include the mythological Battle of Kuru on the west wall; the historical march of the army of Suryavarman II, builder of Angkor Wat, against the Cham, followed by scenes from Heaven and Hell on the south wall; and the classic ‘Churning of the Ocean Milk’ on the east wall. The temple interior is not as densely carved as the first level exterior, but still sports hundreds of fine carvings of apsaras and scenes from Hindu mythology. A guide can be quite helpful in explaining the stories of the various chambers, statues and architectural forms to be found in the interior. At the upper-most of your tour of the temple, the central tower on the third level houses four Buddha images, each facing a different cardinal point, highlighting the fact that though Angkor Wat was constructed as a Hindu temple, it has served as a Buddhist temple since Buddhism became Cambodia’s dominant religion in the 14th century. Some say that it is good luck to pay homage to all four Buddha images before departing Angkor. The northern reflecting pool in front of Angkor Wat is the most popular (and crowded) sunrise location. The sun rises behind Angkor Wat providing a silhouette of the temple’s distinctively shaped towers against a colored sky. Some of the best colors appear just before the sun breaks over the horizon. The visual impact of Angkor Wat, particularly on one's first visit, is awesome. As you pass through the outer gate and get your first glimpse, its size and architecture make it appear two dimensional, like a giant postcard photo against the sky. After you cross through the gate and approach the temple along the walkway it slowly gains depth and complexity. To maximize this effect you should make your first visit in optimal lighting conditions, after 2:00PM when the sun is on the face of the temple. Do not make your first visit to Angkor Wat in the morning when the back lighting obscures the view.

It has been a tradition since the earliest days of tourism in the 19th century to treat visitors to Siem Reap with an ‘Apsara dance performance’ - a taste of classical Khmer culture. No visit to Cambodia is complete without attending at least one performance. Dinner performances are now the most popular venue - most places offering buffet or set menus combined with a one-hour dance performance. Dinner ordinarily begins at 6:00 or 7:00PM and dance performances at 7:30PM or 8:00PM, consisting of 4 or 5 dances (classical and folk). Most dinner performances run $10-$35 including dinner and admission. Some place do not charge admission for the performance, but you are expected to order dinner. For the best seats, call for reservations. 
 
Traditional Khmer dance is not merely dance but is also meant to convey a story or message. There are 
four main modern genres of traditional dance: 1) Classical Dance; 2) Shadow theater; 3) Lakhon Khol 
(all-male masked dance-drama.); 4) Folk Dance. As evidenced in part by the innumerable apsaras 
(celestial dancers) adorning the walls of Angkorian temples, traditional dance has been part of Khmer culture 
for well more than a millennium. Yet there have been ruptures in the tradition over the centuries, making it 
almost impossible to precisely trace the source of the tradition. Though much modern traditional dance was 
inspired by Angkorian-era art and themes, the tradition has not been passed unbroken from the age of Angkor. 
Most traditional dances performed today were developed in the 18th through 20th centuries, beginning in 
earnest with a mid-19th century revival championed by King Ang Duong. Subsequent kings and other royals 
also supported the arts and dance, most particularly Queen Sisowath Kossamak Nearireach in the mid-20th 
century, who not only fostered a resurgence in the development of Khmer traditional dance, but also helped 
move it out of the Palace and popularize it. 
 
Many traditional dances including most Theatrical Folk Dances were developed and refined from the 1940s- 
60s under the patronage of Queen Kossamak at the Conservatory of Performing Arts and the Royal 
University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh. Queen Kossamak trained her granddaughter Princess Bopha Devi in traditional dance from early childhood, and she went on to become the face of Khmer traditional dance in the 1950s and 60s both in Cambodia and abroad. Like so much of Cambodian art and culture, traditional dance was almost lost under the brutal repression of the Khmer Rouge in the late 1970s, only to be revived and reconstructed in the 1980s and 90s due, in large part, to the extraordinary efforts of Princess Bopha Devi. 
Classical dance, including the famous 'Apsara dance,' has a grounded, subtle, restrained, yet feather-light, 
ethereal appearance. Distinct in its ornate costuming, taut posture, arched back and feet, flexed fingers 
flexed, codified facial expressions, slow, close, deliberate but flowing movements, Classical dance is uniquely 
Khmer. It presents themes and stories inspired primarily by the Reamker (the Cambodian version of the 
Indian classic Ramayana) and by the Age of Angkor. 
Folk Dance come in two forms: ceremonial and theatrical. As a general rule, only Theatrical Folk Dance is presented in public performances, with Ceremonial Folk Dances reserved for particular rituals, celebrations and holidays. Theatrical Folk Dances such as the popular Good Harvest Dance and the romantic Fishing Dance are usually adaptations of dances found in the countryside or inspired by rural life and practices. Most of the Theatrical Folk Dances were developed at RUFA in Phnom Penh in the 1960s as part of an effort to preserve and perpetuate Khmer culture and arts.

Dress for a tropical environment - warm, humid, sunny. Wear light, airy, covering clothing to protect from the sun and mosquitoes. The sun can be intense so bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Consider buying a traditional Khmer scarf (krama) to keep the sun off your neck. Carry a raincoat during the wet season (May- October,) though you will probably only need it in the afternoon. You should have mosquito repellent for sunrise and sunset hours. Wear practical shoes for climbing narrow steps and walking on uneven surfaces. For serious temple explorers, a flashlight, notebook and compass can come in handy. Books, refreshments, water, trinkets and snacks are available from small vendors throughout the Park. The temples are too far apart to make foot travel practical (though some hearty visitors are hiking it anyway). Transportation options include: moto-remorques (tuk-tuks) are around $15-$20/day; taxis starting at $25-$30/day; motorcycle taxi (motodup) for $10-$12/day; bicycles for $2-$3/day. 
 
There are always additional fees for transport to distant temples outside the Park (e.g. Banteay Srey, Phnom 
Kulen, Kbal Spean, Koh Ker.) Negotiate the fare with your driver. Bicycling around the temples has become quite popular. If you have the time to spare, the roads are good, the terrain is flat and the distances are about right. See page 101 for more on transportation. This guidebook is an adequate introduction to the temples, but more extensive guides give better, more detailed treatment to the details of the bas-reliefs, temple layouts and architectural/artistic context. Guidebooks and other Angkor related books can be 
purchase at bookstores and many of the souvenir shops. Bootlegged books are sold at the Old Market

Siem reap town

Nestled between rice paddy countryside and set along the Siem Reap River, the provincial capital of Siem Reap City serves as the gateway to the millennium-old ruins of the Angkorian-era Khmer Empire. 
The Angkor Archaeological Park encompasses dozens of temple ruins including Bayon, Ta Prohm and the legendary Angkor Wat whose artistic and archaeological significance and visual impact put it in a class 
with the Pyramids and the Taj Mahal. And though the major temples in the Angkor Archaeological Park are very well touristed these days, it is still possible to capture a bit of the old spirit and discover Angkor. 
Siem Reap Town is where you will probably stay during your visit. The town offers a wide range of accommodations, including several 4 and 5-star hotels, dozens of mid-range places and plenty of budget digs, as well as an amazing variety of restaurants, lots of shopping opportunities and a vibrant nightlife. 
Often missed are the opportunities to experience traditional Cambodia: boat trips on the great Tonle Sap Lake, lake villages and the bird sanctuary, craft shops and silk farms, road tours through rice-paddy countryside and beyond.

The Old Market (Phsar Chas) area, including the nearby Pub Street, Pub Street alleys and the Night Markets, are favorites when visiting Siem Reap. Stretching from the river across to the night markets on Sivutha Blvd, the entire area is now the dining, shopping and nightlife center of town. Sok San Road across Sivutha, opposite the Old Market area has become quite popular as well, sporting dozens of budget-friendly business, especially guesthouses, bars and restaurants. 
Of all the traditional Cambodian markets in Siem 
Reap, the Old Market offers the deepest selection of souvenirs and curios. There are souvenir vendors throughout much the market, especially on the river side. The north side along Street 9 sports a number 
of inexpensive food stalls serving Cambodian fare in an interesting, local atmosphere. A good place for a 
budget meal and a taste of Cambodian street food. 
After the sun goes down, the focus shifts to 'Pub Street' and Pub Street alleys including The Passage, Alley West and The Lane. Named for the numerous pubs that line Street 8, it all began in 1998 when Angkor What? opened its doors - the lone pub on a lonely street. These days Pub Street is lined end to end with restaurants, pubs and shops, making it the tourist center of town, especially after dark. The narrow connecting alleys and passages just off Pub Street have also filled with small businesses, offering a somewhat quieter and more relaxed ambiance the ever-bustling Pub Street. 
 
Things really gets going on Pub Street around 5:00 PM as people return to town from the temples. The curbside seating fills, the bars crank up the music and the street is blocked to motor traffic, making it a pedestrian only area. Most of the drinking venues stay open until at least midnight and couple running until near dawn. 
 
Pub Street’s narrow connecting alleys and passages offer a relaxed, pedestrians- only alternative to the main street. Alley West is a particularly quaint little alley with an artsy, Old World atmosphere. 
The emphasis is firmly on boutiques, each with its own unique style - clothing, fashions, handicrafts, art and souvenirs - and a few little restaurants in the mix as well. Ask your guide or driver to tell you the legend. For sake of ease, take the winding path up the mountain nrather than the stairs, which make for a formidable climb. In the evening around 6:00PM two of the caves disgorge millions of bats which pour into the dusk sky for more than 30 minutes, making quite an impressive site. Not to be missed if you happen to be at Phnom Sampeou in the evening. 
 
Provincial Museum The Battambang Provincial Museum on the riverfront in the center of town houses a large collection of Angkorian and pre-Angkorian artifacts - statues, carvings, bits of ancient temples, pottery, etc. These little provincial museums can be a real treat for the Angkor enthusiast, containing some rare and unique pieces, and this is one of the best of the provincial museums. Hours: 8AM-11AM / 2PM-5PM. Friendly people always happy to see visitors.

From Siem Reap: 
Boat The daily ferry between Battambang and Siem Reap plies a picturesque, 6-8 hour journey across the 
Tonle Sap and along the Sangker River, passing through some beautiful natural areas. The trip is best in 
the late wet season when the river is high. During the dry season it can take considerably longer. The ferry 
departs in both directions at 7:00am. $20/person. The boats do not meet international safety standards. In 
Battambang the ferry dock is at the north end of town just off National Route #5. In Siem Reap the ferry dock is at Chong Khneas, 15km south of town. 
Road (National Routes #6 and #5, via Sisophon): The road from Battambang to Siem Reap around the west 
side of the lake is in very good condition. Bus: At least four bus companies (including Capitol, 
Phnom Penh Sorya and Rith Mony) run two or three daily A/C buses, most leaving in the morning. Buy 
tickets at the bus company office. $4-$5, 3 hours. 
Taxi: A private taxi costs $40 (+/-$5). 
 
From Phnom Penh: 
Road (291km, National Route #5): The road is paved and in good condition.

Cambodia’s Great Tonle Sap Lake sits only 15 km south of town, a unique ecosystem and cultural area offering the opportunity to see a different side of the Siem Reap - floating villages, cultural and nature tours, birdwatching... Basic boat tours can be arranged at the Chong Khneas boat dock but we recommend arranging your tour through a reputable tour operator in Siem Reap. 
 
The Tonle Sap Lake is the most prominent feature on 
the map of Cambodia - a huge dumbbell-shaped body of water stretching across the northwest of the country. 
In the wet season, the lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia, swelling to an expansive 12,000 
km2. During the dry half of the year it shrinks to as small as 2500 km2, draining into the Tonle Sap River, 
which meanders southeast, eventually merging with the Mekong River at the 'chaktomuk' confluence at 
Phnom Penh. During the wet season a unique hydrologic phenomenon causes the Tonle Sap River to reverse direction, filling the lake. The engine of this phenomenon is the Mekong River, which becomes bloated with snow melt and run off from the monsoon rains. The swollen Mekong backs up into the Tonle Sap at the point where the rivers meet at Chaktomuk, forcing the waters of the Tonle Sap River back into the lake. The inflow expands the area of lake more than five-fold, inundating the surrounding forested floodplain and supporting an extraordinarily rich and diverse eco-system. More than 100 varieties of waterbirds including several threatened and endangered species, over 200 species of fish, as well as crocodiles, turtles, 
macaques, otter and other wildlife inhabit the inundated mangrove forests. The Lake is also an important commercial resource, providing more than half of the fish consumed in Cambodia. In harmony with the specialized ecosystems, the human occupations at the edges of the lake is similarly distinctive - floating 
villages, towering stilted houses, huge fish traps, and an economy and way of life deeply intertwined 
with the lake, the fish, the wildlife and the cycles of rising and falling waters. 
 
Prek Toal Bird 
Sanctuary The sanctuary at the Prek Toal core area of the Biosphere Reserve has been called "the single most important breeding ground Southeast Asia for globally threatened large waterbirds." The Biosphere covers 31,282 hectares at the northwest tip of the Lake and plays host to species including Greater and Lesser Adjuncts, Black-headed Ibis, Painted Stork, Milky Stork, Spot-billed Pelican, Grey-Headed Fish Eagle and many more species. Of the three Biosphere core areas on the Tonle Sap Lake, Prek Toal is the most accessible from Siem Reap and the most popular with birdwatchers. The best time of year for viewing 
is the dry season (December-May) when flocks of migratory birds congregate at Prek Toal. As the dry season progresses and the water recedes, the number of birds increases but the travel to some of the 
more important viewing areas becomes more difficult. Arrange a trip to Prek Toal through your guesthouse 
or a tour operator. To do it yourself, take a moto or taxi from Siem Reap to the Chong Khneas boat dock. 
Arrange a boat to the Prek Toal Environmental Research Station (starting at $60 return,) a $20 
entrance fee and $30 for a guided boat tour of the sanctuary. The Research Station has information on the area's flora and fauna. There are also basic overnight accommodations if you want to stay the night to take full advantage of the sunset and early morning viewing hours. 
 
Chong Khneas is the floating village at the edge of the lake closest and most accessible to Siem Reap. If you want a relatively quick and easy look at the Tonle Sap, boat tours of Chong Khneas are available, departing from the Chong Khneas boat docks all day long. Take a tuk-tuk or taxi the 11-15km from Siem Reap to the docks where there are always boats waiting for passengers. Boat pricing is variable, traditionally by the boat, but they’ll charge up to $20/pax. The boatman will probably point out the differing Khmer and Vietnamese floating households and the floating markets, clinics, schools and other boatloads of tourists. Chong Khneas, while interesting, is over-touristed and is not as picturesque as floating villages further afield. The trip usually includes a couple of stops - usually one a touristy floating 'fish and bird exhibition' with a souvenir and snack shop. Sometimes they will also try to get you to agree to stop at a school or orphanage, which we do not recommend. Ask the operator to skip this part of the tour. Kampong Phluk is a cluster of three villages 
of stilted houses built within the floodplain about 16 km southeast of Siem Reap. The villages are primarily 
Khmer and have about 3000 inhabitants between them. 
Flooded mangrove forest surrounds the area and is home to a variety of wildlife including crab-eating macaques. During the dry season when the lake is low, the buildings in the villages seem to soar atop 
their 6-meter stilts exposed by the lack of water. At this time of year many of the villagers move out onto 
the lake and build temporary houses. In the wet season when water level rises, the villagers move back to 
their permanent houses on the floodplain, the stilts now hidden under the water. Kampong Phluk's economy 
is, as one might expect, based in fishing, primary in shrimp harvesting. 
 
Kampong Phluk sees comparatively few foreign visitors and offers a close look at the submerged forest 
and lakeside village life. The area can be reached by boat from the Chong Khneas or by road. It’s easiest 
to make arrangements through a tour operator, or if you are good at bargaining charter a boat at the 
Chong Khneas docks. During the wet season, drive to Roluos village just off Route #6 east of Siem Reap 
and then take a boat through the flooded forest the rest of the way. During the dry season the road is 
clear, making the boat unnecessary. 
 
Kampong Khleang  
Kampong Khleang is located on the northern lake-edge about 35 km east of Siem Reap. It is more remote and less touristed than Kampong Phluk. Visitors during the dry season are universally awestruck by the forest of stilted houses rising up to 10 meters in the air. In the wet season the waters rise to within one or two meters of the buildings. Kampong Khleang is a permanent community within the floodplain of the Lake, with an economy based in fishing and surrounded by flooded forest.But Kampong Khleang is significantly larger with near 10 times the population of Kampong Phluk, making it the largest community on the Lake. 
The area can be reached by boat from the Chong Khneas docks or by a combination of road to Domdek 
on Route #6 and then boat to the village, the best method depending on the time of year. During the dry 
season, boats cannot get all of the way to the main villages. Consult your guesthouse or tour operator about current conditions. Many tour operators have very little experience in this area so it is best to consult 
with adventure tour operators and guesthouses that specialize in this area. To get there yourself, either charter a boat from Chong Khneas or take car or moto to Domdek village on Route #6 east of Siem Reap, turn south and continue to the water's edge where boats wait to ferry passengers into the village. During the dry season the road is clear and you can take a car or moto all of the way to the village.)

Other Things to do in Siem Reap 
As enthralling as the temples of Angkor may be, there are lots of other things to see and do. Seeing a bit of Cambodia away from the temples can help avert ‘temple-burnout’ and round out your Cambodian experience. It also helps Cambodia by taking some tourist pressure off of the temples and spreading tourism dollars a bit more widely. In addition to the following suggestions, check out the sections on visiting the Tonle Sap Lake and on Traditional Dance Performances 
 
Bird Watching / Environmental Tours 
Siem Reap offers some unique birdwatching opportunities. The Prek Toal bird sanctuary on the Tonle Sap 
Lake and the Ang Trapeng Thmor reservoir northeast of Siem Reap both are home to many rare and threatened species. 
Ang Trapeng Thmor (ATT) Sarus Crane Reserve (The following about Ang Trapeng Thmor comes courtesy 
of the Sam Veasna Center.) Originally constructed as a water reservoir, the reservoir was rebuilt for irrigation and water storage by slave labor during the Khmer Rouge Regime. The reservoir now harbors a unique wetland associated with grassland, dipterocarp forests and paddy fields. Aside from being a feeding ground for more than 300 Sarus Crane in the dry (non-breeding) season, more than 200 species of other birds occur here, of which 18 have been classified as globally or near globally threatened. This is also one of the handful of sites in Cambodia where the endangered Eld’s Deer can be seen. Colonies of fruit bats inhabit larger trees that are often semi-submerged on the edge of the reservoir. 
The best time to see the Sarus Crane is from February to March, though an abundance of bird species can be viewed all year. There is also a hill top Angkorian-era temple a few kilometers into the forest where traditional silk weaving is still practiced in the adjacent village. A boat trip can be taken on the reservoir. 
Officially declared a Sarus Crane Reserve in 2000 the designated area covers over 12,000 hectares, following the work of Sam Veasna and friends at the Wildlife Conservation Society, all foreign visitors are required are required to register at the WCS Office. ATT (Ang Trapeng Thmor) is a day trip from Siem Reap though accommodation can be arranged at the through the Sam Veasna Center (see the following listing), giving birdwatchers the chance of dawn sightings and offering the opportunity of visiting the massive 
Angkorian temple complex of Banteay Chmar. Tour Operators Specializing in Birdwatching Angkor Center for Conservation of Biodiversity The Angkor Center for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB) is the first nature conservation center in Cambodia. They offer rescue services to Cambodian wildlife, breed threatened species and serve as an education and training center for communities, wildlife officials and visitors. Visitors are encouraged to visit ACCB, they offer a daily tour Monday through Saturday at 1PM for a minimum donation of $3 per person. 
Sam Veasna Center (SVC) SVC organizes half or full day trips focusing on birds with a trained bird guide. 
SVC was set up to promote wildlife conservation in Cambodia. It works with the Wildlife Conservation 
Society and local village communities to develop remote sites close to the habitat of some spectacular 
bird life. The local communities benefit from the infrastructure set up for the visitors. Trips to see Sarus 
Crane at Ang Trapaeng Thmor, Giant and White Shouldered Ibis at Tamtboey, a vulture restaurant at Chhep, plus some beautiful and unspoiled countryside.

Siem Reap International Airport The Siem Reap International Airport is a 6km, 15 minutes from town center. Taxis, tuk-tuks and motodups can be hired at the ticket desk located just outside the terminal doors. Taxis run $7, tuk-tuks are $5 and motodups $2 into town. Vans are also available for $10. Extra charges may apply for hotels outside the main town area. Most hotels offer free transportation from the airport with advance reservations. 
Chong Kov Sou Bus Station The main bus station is located near Phsar Leu a couple of kilometers west of town center. On arrival, tuk-tuks from the station into town run about $3-$4, and taxis for $5. For passengers departing Siem Reap, most bus companies offer a free shuttle service from the hotel to the 
bus station. See page 96 for more. 
Chong Khneas Ferry Dock For those arriving from Phnom Penh or Battambang by river ferry, the ferry 
dock is located at Chong Khneas near Phnom Krom, 15km south of Siem Reap town. On arrival rates from

As we go to print in May the hot season has well begun and the monsoon rains are due to start in a month or so. Currently days are mostly rainless and quite warm with mid-day temperatures averaging in the in the mid/upper-30s. 
The monsoon rains, when they begin, generally follow a fairly regular pattern with clear mornings and mid-days, and 1-3 hour rains in the mid-late afternoon, making them fairly easy to plan your day around. The monsoon rains ordinarily trickle off by the end of October or beginning of November. 
Though cool-dry season is considered the most comfortable time of year, the monsoon season has its advantages for the temple visitor. The countryside and temples of Angkor are particularly picturesque with their moats and pools full, the vegetation is green and lush. The colors in the wet temple stone stands much brighter and more apparent when wet.

Bayon Airlines offer several daily flights between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.  Buses Bus travel is the most popular means of overland transport between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. 
Ordinarily it’s a 6 hour trip but due to current road construction it can take 7-9 hours these days. 
Prices range from $6-$15 with deluxe buses at the upper end. See page 96 for bus schedules. 
Taxis Private taxis run $60 or more for the whole car. 4-5 hours. Share the car with friends and share the 
cost. Negotiate with a local taxi or arrange a private taxi through your hotel or travel agent. Generally 
speaking, the better the car, the higher the price. River Transport River ferries between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap on the Tonle Sap used to be the most popular means of travel. These days the local ferry is less popular, running part of the year (August - March), but higher quality slow boats have gained popularity 
with outfits like Compagnie Fluevial Du Mekong and Tara Boat running regular trips (see below.) When 
running, the local ferries depart 7:30AM from the Phnom Penh Port on Sisowath Quay and in Siem 
Reap, the docks at Chong Khneas, 15km south of town. Tickets and can be purchased through hotels or

The Road and Motorcycling to Siem Reap Some of the road to Siem Reap is paved and in good condition, but long sections of National Route 6A and 6 are currently under construction and in rough shape. 
Driving in Cambodia is very challenging and should be attempted only by experienced riders. Road hogging 
buses and farm animals on the road are the norm. The trip calls for a bike no smaller than 250cc and can be 
made in an easy 6 hours, but two days with a layover in Kampong Thom allows time to visit the nearby pre- 
Angkorian ruins of Sambor Prei Kuk as well as explore some of the other sites. The usual route from Phnom Penh follows 6A north 75km to the Skun intersection. But due to road conditions consider an alternate route following Route 5 to the Prek Kdam bridge, then cut back to 6A, bypassing some of the construction. Head north on 6A and bear left at Skun (known for its exotic foods - check out the fried spiders) onto Route #6 to Kampong Thom. In Kampong Thom, the Arunreas Hotel (near the market, 062-961294) and Stung Sen Royal Hotel (on the corner at the bridge, 012-309495) are affordable places.Arunreas is also one of the more popular restaurants in town, serving reasonably priced Cambodian food.

Temples Outside the Main Park Area 
The Roluos Group (13km east of Siem Reap Town) Though the densest concentration of ruins is to be found within the Angkor Park, there are Khmer temple ruins scattered across Cambodia as well as parts of Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. Some temples outside the Park area such as Roluos Group, Banteay Srey and Phnom Krom are comparatively close to Siem Reap and easily incorporated into most itineraries. More remote sites such as Beng Melea, Koh Ker, Banteay Chhmar and Preah Vihear take a full day or more to visit due to distance. 
The journey to these remote temples can be as interesting as the temple ruins themselves - traveling though picturesque countryside, rural villages and tropical jungle. An expedition to a remote temple is also a great way to see a bit of 'real Cambodia' away from more touristed areas. Tour operators specializing in trips to remote temples can organize transportation and guides as well as cultural tours, multi-day expeditions, village and jungle overnights. The Roluos Group (13km east of Siem Reap Town) 
The Roluos Group is a collection of monuments representing the remains of Hariharalaya, the first major capital of the Angkorian-era Khmer Empire. It has become known as the ‘Roluos Group’ due to its proximity to the modern town of Roluos. The ancient capital was named for Hari-Hara, a synthesis of the Hindu gods Shiva and Vishnu. Though there was an existing settlement in the area before the rise of Angkor, Hariharalaya was established as a capital city by Jayavarman II and served as the Khmer capital for over 70 years under four successive kings. Setting the pattern for the next four centuries, the first great Khmer temples (Bakong, Preah Ko, Lolei and a baray) were constructed at Hariharalaya. The last king at Hariharalaya, Yasovarman I, built the first major temple at Angkor, Phnom Bakheng, and moved the capital to the Bakheng area in 905 C.E. With the exception of a 20 year interruption in the 10th century, the capital would remain at Angkor until 1422 C.E. The Roluos Group is located about 13km (20 minutes) southeast of Siem Reap and is easily included in any three day temple itinerary. Admission to the Roluos Group is included in you regular Angkor Park admission pass.

Constructed: Late 9th century C.E. Religion: Hindu King/Patron: Indravarman I Style: Preah Ko Roluos Group: The most impressive member of the Roluos Group, sitting at the center of the first Angkorian capital, Hariharalaya. Bakong stands 15 meters tall and is 650x850m at the outer wall. Constructed by the third Angkorian-era king as his state-temple, Bakong represents the first application of the temple-mountain architectural formula on a grand scale and set the architectural tone for the next 400 years. The temple displays a very early use of stone rather than brick. 
Though begun by Indravarman I, Bakong received additions and was expanded by later kings. The uppermost section and tower may have been added as late as the 12th century AD. Some of the lintel carvings, particularly on the outer towers, are in very good shape. Picturesque moat and vegetation surround Bakong. 
 
Preah Ko  
Constructed: Late 9th century C.E. Religion: Hindu (Shiva) King/Patron: Indravarman I Style: Preah Ko 
Roluos Group. Six towers displaying set on a platform, all beautifully preserved carvings. Originally surrounded by walls and gopuras of which only vestiges remain. Preah Ko was one of the first major temples of the empire at the early Khmer capital of Hariharalaya. Preah Ko (Sacred Bull) derives its name from the statues of bulls at the front of the central towers. 
 
Lolei  
Constructed: Late 9th century C.E. Religion: Hindu 
King/Patron: Yasovarman I Style: Preah Ko/Bakheng Roluos Group: Ruins of an island-temple built in the middle of a now dry baray, Indratataka, the first large-scale baray constructed by a Khmer king. Lolei consists of four brick towers on a double laterite platform. It was the last major temple built at Roluos before Yasovarman I moved the capital to the Angkor area. Though the towers are in poor condition, there are some lintel carvings in very good condition displaying the distinctively detailed Preah Ko style. An active pagoda has been built amongst the ruins. Of the Roluos Group ruins, allocate the least time Lolei. See ‘Roluos Group’ and ‘Barays’.

Angkor Wat is surrounded by a moat and an exterior wall measuring 1300 meters x 1500 meters. The temple 
itself is 1 km square and consists of three levels surmounted by a central tower. The walls of the temple are covered 
inside and out with bas-reliefs and carvings. Nearly 2000 distinctively rendered apsara carvings adorn the 
walls throughout the temple and represent some of the finest examples of apsara carvings in Angkorian-era art. 
But it is the exterior walls of the lower level that display the most extraordinary bas-reliefs, depicting stories and 
characters from Hindu mythology and the historical wars of Suryavarman II. It is in the viewing of the bas-reliefs 
that a tour guide can be very helpful. 
The first level of is the most artistically interesting. Most visitors begin their exploration with the bas-reliefs that cover the exterior wall of the first level, following the bas-reliefs counterclockwise around the temple. Bas-relief highlights include the mythological Battle of Kuru on the west wall; the historical march of the army of Suryavarman II, builder of Angkor Wat, against the Cham, followed by scenes from Heaven and Hell on the south wall; and the classic ‘Churning of the Ocean Milk’ on the east wall. The temple interior is not as densely carved as the first level exterior, but still sports hundreds of fine carvings of apsaras and scenes from Hindu mythology. A guide can be quite helpful in explaining the stories of the various chambers, statues and architectural forms to be found in the interior. At the upper-most of your tour of the temple, 
the central tower on the third level houses four Buddha images, each facing a different cardinal point, highlighting the fact that though Angkor Wat was constructed as a Hindu temple, it has served as a Buddhist temple since Buddhism became Cambodia’s dominant religion in the 14th century. Some say that it is good luck to pay homage to all four Buddha images before departing Angkor. 
The northern reflecting pool in front of Angkor Wat is the most popular (and crowded) sunrise location. The sun rises behind Angkor Wat providing a silhouette of the temple’s distinctively shaped towers against a colored sky. Some of the best colors appear just before the sun breaks over the horizon. The visual impact of Angkor Wat, particularly on one's first visit, is awesome. As you pass through the outer gate and get your first glimpse, its size and architecture make it appear two dimensional, like a giant postcard photo against the sky. After you cross through the gate and approach the temple along the walkway it slowly gains depth and complexity. To maximize this effect you should make your first visit in optimal lighting conditions, after 
2:00PM when the sun is on the face of the temple. Do not make your first visit to Angkor Wat in the morning 
when the back lighting obscures the view. 
 
T here are dozens of ruins in the Siem Reap area, many of the most significant within the Angkor 
Archaeological Park north of town, others further afield. The temples vary in importance, interest and 
condition and are spread over a large area, often kilometers apart. In order to get the most of your visit, it 
is best to prepare a preliminary itinerary. Your itinerary should depend largely on the length of your visit and 
your level of interest, though some ruins are must-sees. Any itinerary should include the legendary Angkor 
Wat and Bayon. These two temples offer the most spectacular and unique examples of Angkorian art and 
architecture. On the road trip to Bayon, you will also see the South Gate and other minor ruins. As it is within 
walking distance of Bayon, even the briefest visit can usually include central Angkor Thom with its artistically 
interesting terraces and massive ‘temple-mountains,’ Baphuon and Phimeanakas. 
As time and interest allows, build the rest of your itinerary around visiting each type of major ruin – temple 
mountains such as Pre Rup, Ta Keo, Bakong and West Mebon; flat, sprawling monastic complexes such 
as Ta Prohm, Preah Khan and Banteay Kdei; and unique monuments such as Neak Pean and Srah Srang. 
The Roluos Group, which is comprised the monuments of an early Khmer capital, sits about 13 km west of 
Siem Reap. It is a bit out of the way, but offers some fine examples of early Angkorian art and should be 
included in two or three day itineraries. Of special note is the artistically exquisite but more even distant temple, Banteay Srey. If there is any way of squeezing it into your itinerary, it is well worth it.

Ta Prohm is well worth an extended exploration of its dark corridors and open plazas. This temple was one of Jayavarman VII's first major temple projects. Ta Prohm was dedicated to his mother. (Preah Khan, built shortlyin the same general style, was dedicated to Jayavarman VII’s father.) Ta Prohm was originally constructed as a Buddhist monastery and was enormously wealthy in its time, boasting of control over 3000 villages, thousands of support staff and vast stores of jewels and gold. Of the monastic complex style temples, Ta Prohm is a superior example and should be included in almost any temple itinerary.</div>
 
Barays  
A ‘baray’ is a water reservoir - an area of land where dikes have been raised to catch and hold water. Beginning in the 9th century, the construction of massive barays and other such grand projects became one of the marks of Angkorian kingship. There are four major barays in the area. When the barays were constructed, an island temple was set at the center of each. The first major baray to be constructed was Indratataka by Yasovarman I, measuring 3.8km x 880m and completed in 889AD when the capital was still at Hariharalaya near Roluos. Lolei (Roluos Group) sat on an island in the middle. Construction of the second major baray, the East Baray (Yashodharatataka,) began almost immediately after. At 7.8km x 880m it was almost five times larger than the Indratataka. Almost 50 years later, the temple East Mebon was constructed on an island in the center. The third and largest baray (8km x 2.2km) is the West Baray built in the early 11th century. Unlike the others, the West Baray is still partially filled, creating a sizable lake. The temple ruins of West Mebon sit on an artificial island at the center of the baray (requiring a short boat ride to visit.) 
The last baray (Jayatataka) was constructed by Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century. It is considered to be the baray of Preah Khan though it is Neak Pean that actually sits at the center. The function of barays is a matter of academic debate. Some argued the barays did not serve an agricultural purpose but were maintained solely for political/religious reasons. Conventional wisdom has it that the barays were part of a giant waterworks used to irrigate the rice paddies and provide water for year round cultivation, though they certainly served a political and religious function as well. 
 
Bayon

If you see only two temples, Angkor Wat and Bayon should be the ones. The giant stone faces of Bayon have become one of the most recognizable images connected to classic Khmer art and architecture. There are 37 standing towers, most but not all sporting four carved faces oriented toward the cardinal points. Who the faces might represent is a matter of debate but it has been argued it may be Loksvara, Mahayana Buddhism's compassionate Bodhisattva, or perhaps a combination of Buddha and Jayavarman VII. Bayon was the Jayavarman VII's state-temple and in many ways represents the pinnacle of his massive building campaign. It appears to be, and is to some degree, an architectural muddle, in part because it was constructed in a somewhat piecemeal fashion for over a century. The best of Bayon are the bas-reliefs on the exterior walls of the lower level and on the upper level where the stone faces reside. The bas-reliefs on the southern wall contain real-life scenes from the historical sea battle between the Khmer and the Cham. It is not clear whether this represents the Cham invasion of 1177AD or a later battle in which the Khmer were victorious. Even more interesting are extensive carvings of unique and revealing scenes of everyday life that are interspersed among the battle scenes, including market scenes, cockfighting, chess games and childbirth. Also note the unfinished carvings on other walls, likely indicating the death of Jayavarman VII and the subsequent end of his building campaign. Some of the reliefs on the inner walls were carved at a later date under the Hindu king Jayavarman VIII. The surrounding tall jungle makes Bayon a bit dark and flat for photographs near sunrise and sunset.

If you arrive in Siem Reap within the late afternoon, do go and buy your pass at 5:00pm. They'll let you to the compound and you could find a sunset (the sunset pictures are wonderful at Angkor Wat westside). Your pass can be activated the following day. 
 
Do specify what type of Angkor Wat pass you need. The regular passes are great for one day ($20), 2 or 3 days ($40) and one week ($60), but you could have the 3-day pass to use within 1 week, and also the 1-week pass for use within 1 month. Make sure you specify this during the time of purchase. 
 
Do keep the pass handy, while you will be asked to show it whenever going into the temples. A plastic pass case on the leash comes in handy, and can protect the pass from getting dirty or damaged. 
Do hire a guide if you wish to have in-depth historical and social information as well as get access to the most impressive paths where to understand more about every temple. The guides also realize exactly where all of the great carvings/reliefs are and will explain to you those as well. The guide can also be responsible for organizing transportation, so do specify if you want to travel by tuk-tuk, car or mini-van. 
 
CLOTHING 
Do wear light-weight clothes. Whilst numerous people choose ethereal cotton fabrics, other people choose synthetics for example the kind that you can get at mountaineering shops. The climate is really humid more often than not, and also the synthetic fibers wick away perspires and dry on the body. 
Don't wear unveiling clothing- short pants or midriff-baring tops, low cut blouses, etc (specifically for women). Longer shorts, like right above the knee or Capri jeans are perfectly acceptable. Do remember that if you need to climb up to the towers atop Angkor Wat that both women and men must be "respectfully dressed", for example covered shoulders and chest, and long pants or skirts (long shorts are acceptable). 
 
DO BRING A HAT OR CAP AND SUNGLASSES 
Do wear sensible shoes. Whilst formally the temples can be done in a set of flip-flops, it might be a wiser option to use a set of hiking sandals for instance Teva or Keens. (Toe coverage is another good option.) While sneakers and socks or hiking boots might be overkill with the heat and moisture of Cambodia, the bottom line is to wear what you feel comfortable. 
 
Don't forget a light jacket (such as micro fleece) for earlier mornings, particularly if you are getting out by tuk-tuk or motodup. It will get very freezing within the wee hours with the wind blowing, particularly in the chiller months. 
 
MONEY AND TIPPING 
Do take small bills (US$1 and $5) for shopping and tipping. US dollar becomes unofficial currency in Siem Reap and the majority of vendors, even street vendors prefer US dollar. Vendors merely price their products in US dollar but many market vendors will not have change for any $50 bill. 
Don't change US dollar into the riel in a bank and you may lose about 9 percent since bank exchange rate is at 1 USD= 3700 riels while vendors are pricing at 4000 riels. In case you receive large bills from bank such as 10000 or 50000 riels, it'll actually make harder for tipping. Riels in small face value is nice to have and handy for tipping, as well as for donations when going to the temples. 
 
Do tip for outstanding service. This consists of guides and drivers (roughly $2~$3 per day, each), masseuses, and waitstaff at restaurants. For waitstaff, "rounding off the bill" by leaving some bills (riel) would be fine. Do know that tipping isn't expected, but can be really much appreciated, and whether or not to tip the amount to be offered is totally up to the discretion of the visitor. 
 
Do critically think about exactly what you will be doing before buying products from kids in the temple. If they're making money there, why should they bother to go to school? In addition, the books they are selling are cheap copies and also the authors don't get royalties from the sales. Sharing a smile or a chat with these children is really a better option, and at least they'll reach practice their English with the friendly visitor. 
 
SAFETY AND HEALTH 
Do sign up for an insurance plan which will include treatment or incidents before leaving, or consult your insurance company at home to know whether you will be covered when abroad. 
 
Do use sunscreen. You could take your favorite brand from home, or buy it when there. 
Do use insect repellent. As the risk of contracting malaria is very low in the immediate Siem Reap area, if you are going to the countryside (Phnom Kulen, Koh Ker, etc) then you'll need to use a good DEET-based insect repellent. Repellent having a concentration of 25% is enough, and will be used every 6 hours or more often whenever you sweat. Keep in mind, the sunscreen goes on first, the bug spray last. 
 
Don't forget to drink lots of water. If you're not used to humidity (or dry weather), you could easily get dehydrated. You should check with the driver in advance to see if he supplies water (many do, as well as have a little cooler). Otherwise, bring one bottle on hand and you may buy more on the way.

Therefore, you will find international 5-star hotels such as the Intercontinental Hotel, Raffles Hotel le Royal, Le Meridien Hotel, and Sofitel, along with a multitude of chic boutique hotels. Additionally, there are more affordable hotels and guesthouses of various sizes and grades to satisfy tourists’ requirements and budget. 
 
Question: Can I find accommodation for around US $10 per night and what can I expect? 
 
Answer: $5-$10: May get you a room with a bed and a fan at a backpacker-friendly guesthouse. Most of these will provide a clean mattress with sheets that are changed only when you leave. You may have to share a common bathroom. Some rooms may come with hot water, many not. $10-$20: May get you a more comfortable room with an air-conditioner, a bed, and a clean bathroom. Don’t expect any frills, though some rooms may provide a fridge and cable TV. Some small guest houses have their rooms cleaned daily. $20+: This falls under small hotels and guesthouses. As the price rises, you may expect extras, such as TV with full cable, DVD player, breakfast, pool and sauna, etc. 
 
Question: Should I bargain for everything I wish to buy in Cambodia? 
 
Answer: Not necessarily. If an item carries a price tag, you're not expected to bargain. You are not expected to bargain at a restaurant either. However, it’s only human to wish for a better deal and it is expected of tourists to do so at markets and tourist sites. A little friendly negotiation can sometimes make buying more fun. 
 
Question: What shouldn't I do when bargaining in Cambodia? 
 
Answer: Do not yell, scream or behave such that the vendor feels intimidated. 
Do not lose your sense of humor or throw your money at the vendor. 
Do not refuse to buy something after the vendor has accepted your price. You are supposed to be having fun--don't take it so seriously as to let bargaining ruin your fun. 
 
Question: How much should I budget per day for a vacation in Cambodia? 
 
Answer: Depending on your accommodation and itinerary, budget anywhere from $10-$50 per day. In Phnom Penh, you can rent a room in a guesthouse for as little as $5 a night; in more remote areas, a basic room in a guesthouse might be half that price. A plate of fried rice or noodles will only put you back by another $1, and transportation by tuk-tuk or moto will usually only be $1-$2 per trip. 
 
Question: Can I drink directly from the tap in Cambodia? 
 
Answer: No; generally, it's not a good idea. If you have to drink from the tap, do make sure that you boil the water before consuming it. Bottled water is relatively inexpensive in Cambodia. 
What kind of food can I find in Cambodia? Answer: Cambodia welcomes a good mix of visitors from all corners of the world. There are restaurants serving all types of international cuisine. In Cambodia, you can be certain to find the kind of food to satisfy your palate, including halal, vegetarian, and vegan food. 
 
Question: What is the best way to get around in Cambodia? 
 
Answer: During daytime in Phnom Penh, walking is probably the best way to enjoy the city. Generally, from almost anywhere in Phnom Penh, a walk to Wat Phnom takes about a good 30 to 45 minutes at a reasonable pace. Although moto-dops (motor cycle taxis) are inexpensive and plentiful, try to spend at least some time walking around the city. There are also the tuk-tuks if you are moving around in a group of more than two. Negotiate your fare before you get on the ride so that there is no haggling when you reach your destination. The drivers usually speak some English. You can also ring for a metered taxi which is usually air-conditioned. Your hotel can help you with the booking.

Admission to the AngkorArcheological Park is through the Angkor pass. This pass is needed to visit any of the temples within the park. It is valid for all monuments in the Siem Reap area, except for Beng Mealea and Phnom Kulen. Apart from these two sites, there are no separate admission fees or tickets to visit any specific site. 
Be sure to have a valid pass, tickets are regularly checked at most of the monuments and at the checkpoints. 
 
FEES FOR BENG MEALEA AND PHNOM KULEN 
Both Beng Mealea and Phnom Kulen are away from the main temples. Beng Mealea is a temple about 40 kilometers East of Angkor Wat. There is a separate US$ 5 admission fee to visit this temple. Phnom Kulen is a mountain range and pilgrimage site about 35 kilometers North East ofAngkor Wat. There is a separate US$ 20 admission fee to visit the site. 
 
WHERE TO BUY THE ANGKOR PASS 
The main ticket sales office is the Angkor Conservation Area ticket booth on Charles de Gaulle road, the road between Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. All Angkor passes are available here. 
The checkpoints on the road between Siem Reap airport and Angkor Wat and the checkpoint at the Banteay Srei temple along Route 67 only sell passes with one day validity. Ticket booths are open daily from 5 am until 5.30 pm. These are the only places to get valid passes. Hotels, guest houses, shops etc are not authorized to sell Angkor passes. 
 
TYPES OF PASSES 
Passes for several durations are available. 
· 1 day at US$ 20 
· 3 days at US$ 40 
· 7 days at US$ 60 
 
There are two versions of the multi day tickets. The older version's validity is for 3 or 7 consecutive days. The newer version's 3 day ticket is valid for any 3 days within a week, the 7 day ticket for any 7 days within a month. Admission for children younger than 12 is free. Prices are quoted in US Dollars, but can also be paid in Cambodian Riel, Thai Baht or Euro. Entry for Cambodian citizens is free. If you bring a Cambodian guide or driver, there is no entrance fee to be paid for him or her. 
 
The information board at the ticket booths list strict rules: 
Passes are not refundable. 
Passes are not transferable. The pass contains a photo that is taken with a webcam at the ticket office. 
Passes are not valid after their validity date. Passes have a validity from and to date printed on them. 
Tickets bought before 5 pm are valid the same day. It is not possible to buy a one day pass for the next day. 
 
For example, if you buy a ticket at 4 pm it is valid that day only, the next day you will have to buy a new ticket. Tickets bought after 5 pm are valid the same day until sunset and the next day. Make sure the pass is not stamped or holes punched into it, which invalidates it. 
 
park admission 
You must possess an admission pass to visit the Park. All passes can be purchased at the main entrance on the road to Angkor Wat. Passes are sold in one-day ($20), three-day ($40) and seven-day ($60) blocks. The three day pass is valid for one week, i.e. 3 days to be used within the week, not necessarily consecutively. The seven day pass is valid for one month, i.e. 7 days to be used within the month, not necessarily consecutively. A one-day visit allows you to see highlights of the most famous ruins but little more. Three days is sufficient to visit all of the major temples, a few of the minor ones and have a little extra time for favorites. Seven days is enough to really explore some of your favorites and visit many minor structures as well. The admissions office opens at 5:00AM. Park visiting hours are 5:30AM - sunset. Banteay Srey closes at 5:00PM and Kbal Spean at 3:00PM. Always carry your ticket. It will be checked upon each park entry 102 
Almost all hotels are located in or near Siem Reap Town. There are none within the park. With the exception of Roluos 13km east, the most important temples in the area lay 4-15km north of town, the closest being 
Angkor Wat. To visit the temples you will need to decide how long to stay, purchase an admission 
pass, arrange transportation and obtain a guidebook or tour guide.
